Day 1 of the 31 Day Film Challenge: Favourite Film.
The answer has to be Michael Curtiz' Casablanca (1942). This film has everything—a perfect cast
comprised of cynical Humphrey Bogart with a conscience, beautiful Ingrid
Bergman torn between desire and devotion, the brilliant Claude Rains who steals
every scene he’s in, noble but dull Paul Henreid, the wonderful Dooley
Wilson on piano, and a fantastic group of supporting actors including Peter
Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, Conrad Veidt, S.Z. Sakall, and Leonid Kinskey; some
of the best dialogue ever written (“Round up the usual suspects”); one of the
most memorable songs (“As Time Goes By”); and a perfect atmosphere thanks to the cinematography of Arthur Edeson. Did I mention the Nazis? What more could you ask for?
It also has one of the greatest film endings too. I don't know about you but I always found the relationship between Rick and Louis much more interesting than Rick and Ilsa. Oh, I could go on and on about this film. Casablanca. Best. Film. Ever.
