Day 7: A Film With Your Favourite Soundtrack

Day 7 of the 31 Day Film Challenge: A film with your favourite soundtrack.

This is a hard one. There are so many memorable soundtracks out there—Ry Cooder’s haunting slide guitar in Paris, Texas, the cool jazz of Miles Davis for Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, every Arlen and Harburg song in The Wizard of Oz. Yet if I had to choose one it would be The Third Man (1949). Composed and performed by Anton Karas on the zither (an instrument that would become world famous after the release of the film), the soundtrack for The Third Man is as much a character in the film as any of the actors. From the first jangly notes of the theme song (often referred to as “The Harry Lime Theme”), the viewer is instantly transported to bleak, post-war Vienna while the often up-beat tempo of the music only serves to heighten the already paranoid atmosphere. One of the greatest soundtracks for one of the greatest films ever made.
